Her Purpose Campaign w/ Lola Bakare

  1. Tell me about who you are and the work you do.

My name is Lola Bakare and I am a Yoruba girl from Lagos, Nigeria. My heritage is incredibly important to me which is why my brand name is “Omoayo”. Omoayo means child of joy and my personal goal is to spread as much joy as I can through my work which in turn for me translates into bright colors for me. I truly believe purpose is fluid so right now my purpose is to spread love and light through my work and I chose my work to be fashion and photography because I enjoy these two a lot. I love capturing genuine and candid moments with people through my lens. The work I do is working with brands to create content that speaks for itself as well as creating content I love.

2. What is the most challenging and rewarding aspect of your work?

The most challenging aspect is getting inspired when I feel down, trying to push through a wall. This is very difficult for me sometimes and to deal with this, I usually try to have things that inspire me around my place like flowers, canvases with inspirational quotes and aesthetics I love in general. The most rewarding aspect is when people organically engage with my content and content I create for brands. It makes me feel like I am on the right path, you know. Spreading my smile and joy in my own little way; fulfilling my purpose.

3. What is your purpose and how are you using your career/business to fulfill it?

I feel like I already sort of touched on this before but like I mentioned purpose to me is fluid but for now, I believe my purpose is to spread love and light in all that I do making sure to resound to everyone that they are enough and more than enough. Currently, I am using fashion and photography to fulfill this purpose. Although I currently don’t publish photos I take of people, whenever I interact with them, I ensure that they leave our interaction knowing or reaffirmed in the fact that they are both beautiful and enough. With my fashion, I am spreading my love of colors and clothes to spread my message of love and bringing light to people using my social media. It is a journey that has only begun.

4. How did you discover your purpose and what steps do you take to continuously operate in it?

I think everyone or rather most people are trying to discover what their purpose is and that discovery process although good might take you off the path of what it is you are supposed to be doing right now. So, in discovering my purpose for a particular season and time, I ask myself what is it you really want to do (what makes me come alive when I do it)? How can get to doing this which I want to do? How does this impact the world (Make a positive difference)? SO, in answering these three questions, my purpose in that season answers those three questions for me. I know that my pupose makes me come alive, so I live my life with that overarching purpose which is to spread love, light and joy through all my works.

5. What does the future look like for you?

I honestly don’t know. I am excited for the possibility and of course I have certain aspirations. I am just one who would rather allow my work to speak for myself in the present and hope for the best in the future.
